June 2, 2023
Dear Radiant,
Something beautiful happens in Acts chapter two.
After the Holy Spirit comes at Pentecost, Peter preaches a convicting sermon and thousands come to faith in Jesus Christ.
But that’s not the end. Pentecost is the beginning of a new kind of community — one empowered by God’s presence — the “new wine of the Spirit.”
And it’s beautiful — just read Acts 2:42-47.
This community has patterns of worship, and breaking bread, sharing with those in need. They see the power of God bursting forth in miracles in their common life.
Others notice. The Lords adds daily to those being saved.
It’s an amazing picture and has always been an aspirational one for me.
But I wonder if we would really want this kind of community if it were offered to us? Is it possible to live in this way again in our own context and culture?
This Sunday, I’m excited to hear teaching and sharing from our very own Martha and Matt Miles.
They answer the above questions with resounding “yes.”
They are dear friends of mine who moved to Modesto from Oakland to pursue God’s kingdom for our city.
They are dreamer and doers who work with Innerchange — a Christian order that is cultivating followers of Jesus at the margins.
While pursuing an Acts 2 kind of community is never easy, I’ve witnessed and experienced the power of God at work in the Miles’ lives and ministry — in a very “Acts two” kind of way.
We’ll see you this Sunday at 5!

MORE ABOUT EHS:
Pete Scazzero planted and pastored a church a growing church in Queens, New York City. But after 17 years he hit a wall. He realized that while he had experienced conversion to Christ he had never let Jesus deeply transform his heart and character. He was exhausted and not joyful about his life with God. His marriage was hurting and he was resentful about ministry. But Scazzero’s journey eventually led him to a spiritual revolution and a different way — one where he discovered the vital connection between emotional health and spiritual vitality.
The Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Course is the fruit of Scazzero’s journey. This is an 8 week course which includes video content and group discussion. Scazzero outlines his journey and offers a road map for a discipleship with Jesus that is powerfully transformative. Topics include how to identify emotionally unhealthy spirituality, how to grow your soul through grief and loss, and how to develop into an emotionally mature adult.
24 HOURS OF PRAYER – 6/23-6/24
“Where there is much prayer, there will be much of the Spirit; where there is much of the Spirit, there will be ever-increasing prayer.” – Andrew Murray
We are back at it again. Prayer as been VITAL to our journey as a church. We are creating space for prayer — praying as a church for 24 hours straight. We’ll begin Friday at 6PM at ELC and end with worship on Saturday night from 5-6PM. All are welcome. Prayer is learned by praying and we are all still learners. Sign up for a prayer slot here.
