Dear Radiant,

Which criminal are you?

One criminal hung on the cross and insulted Jesus, mocking him:

“One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”  Luke 24:39.

The other criminal saw Jesus and somehow beheld a king, asking “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Luke 23:42.

These criminals are the archetypal human responses to suffering and our sin.  We are either hardened by it or softened by it.   We can become callous or we can become malleable clay.

The difference between the two This is a great mystery.

But the good news is that we get to choose what to do when we find ourselves on our proverbial cross whether by our own guilt or by life’s circumstances.  Do we acknowledge our reality and our guilt and our pain and choose to look outside ourselves to God for help?

Or do we blame others, even blame God?

Again, the irony is that being crucified alongside Jesus meant salvation for the penitent criminal.  For the other criminal, it did not.

Here’s what is sobering: their proximity to Jesus didn’t guarantee their ability to acknowledge him as king, it was their heart that mattered.

So our cross can be a new beginning.  Our deepest suffering can lead to our ultimate liberation even if we aren’t sure how.

If we listen there — we just might hear the surprising and comforting words of Jesus: “Truly I tell you…..”

See you this Sunday at 10 AM.
