Dear Radiant, English cultural critic and devout Christian, Os Guinness, writes: “I live before the audience of One – before others I have nothing to gain, nothing to lose, nothing to prove.”

Guinness’ words reflect the teachings of Jesus who warns us against living for the approval and affirmation of others.

Jesus invites us to cultivate a “secret” devotion to God — a life with God that isn’t tied to gaining the approval of others.

This has always been a tough teaching.  We human creatures are prone to play to the audience.  Perhaps especially in religious circles.

Our motives get mixed.

But I wonder if it is even more challenging in our times where our “audience” has grown exponentially though technology and social media?

We live “public lives” in a way we haven’t before.  How might we practice the “secrecy” Jesus encourages in this milieu?

The good news, as Guinness notes, is that living before the audience of the One who loves us frees us to quit the “social approval” game.

Let’s be honest — it was a horrible game anyway.

Instead, taking off our masks, we are able to be present and actually love people without fear of their approval or rejection.

This sounds like a good way to live.

Join us this Sunday as we continue “The Simple Way” series on Jesus’ Sermon the Mount and consider how to practically embrace this way of life.

See you at 5!

What is Alpha?  Alpha is a series of conversations about things we all question in life: Why do bad things happen to good people? What’s the purpose of life? What’s next?
It’s for those exploring Jesus, for those who are skeptical, for those who want to be refreshed. It is an 10 week course, but you are welcome to come to the first gathering to check it out, no commitment required.  This is a great community to invite friends who are exploring faith — all questions welcomed If you’re looking for a judgment-free space to ask hard questions, share your own opinion, or even just observe, there’s a place for you.  Sign up here.
